The Story Behind our Name – the Meaning of Liyan

“My art is a celebration of the enduring connection I feel towards my family’s two traditional tribal groups, both who live in the Kimberley region of WA - the “Nyikina Mangala” people on the Fitzroy River and the “Jabirr Jabirr” people on the coast of Willie Creek and Broome”

Simone Atkinson

Liyan CoFounder & Lead Designer

In the Nyikina language, there’s a concept called ‘Liyan’. It’s our moral compass - the intuition, that guides us through life. Liyan teaches us to feel; it helps build our relationship with Country. Liyan is our inner spirit, and when it connects with the spirit of country it heightens our sense of well-being, empowering us with balance and harmony.

The Liyan Towels Difference

Simone’s stunning, culturally sensitive designs tell the story of her family’s rich Indigenous heritage. Her intricate, vibrant designs are inspired by the natural landscapes, vibrant coastlines, wildflowers, and rich pindan soil of Western Australia.

Each Liyan design carries a unique narrative, transforming a simple travel or gym accessory into a stunning piece of art that tells a story.
This blend of functionality, cultural significance, and aesthetic appeal makes
Liyan a truly enriching brand experience.
